James Michael Schriever

Retired Sgt. James Michael Schriever, 72, the son of William and Viva (Irwin) Schriever, was born May 13, 1946, in Superior. He died Oct. 26, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Schriever was the second of four children. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church. He attended Beaverville Country School and graduated from Superior High School with the Class of 1964. He attended Kearney State College before serving with the U.S. Navy, where he served on the USS Paul Revere in Vietnam. When Schriever returned from the Navy in 1968, he farmed with his dad and attended Fairbury Junior College. He served with the National Guard for many years, retiring from Detachment 1, 995th Maintenance Company when it was in Mankato, Kansas. He held a variety of jobs, but mostly tended bar at the American Legion. He remained close to home. Schriever often talked about the good people of Superior and how fortunate he was to live in a small community. He had a heart and patience for children and the elderly. His nieces and nephews always had a shoulder to sleep on, arms to cradle them, and someone to play with. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Cecil Lovewell. Survivors include his brother, Lee (Susan) Schriever of panama, Nebraska; sisters, Susan Aiken of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Kathe Lovewell of Wamego, Kansas; seven nieces and nephews; Shanta Schriever-Starns, Lesley Aiken, Katie Aiken, William Lovewell, Hope Whiteford, Emily O'Connell, Noah Lovewell and 10 great-nieces and nephews. He will be honored by his family at a private funeral.
