Col. George Mills Boyd Ph.D., was born in Teaneck, New Jersey, and passed away in Wichita, Kansas, where he resided with his wife, since retirement from the United States Air Force in 1971. George is survived by his wife, Mattie S. Boyd; daughter, Gertrude Boyd-Burns; grandchildren Brian, Larnie, and Alitta Boyd; nephew, Joseph Mitchell; sister-in-law, Annette Shepard Durham; and many more family and friends.
] Boyd, a combat veteran, served for over 28 years with the United States Air Force. He is also a Documented Tuskegee Airman of World War II (Class 45G). Boyd achieved the grade of colonel and was the commander and director of the Kansas Wing and Department of Civil Air Patrol. Boyd also served as the director of aviation for the state of Kansas, and he worked as an executive in several Kansas corporations. Boyd received the Congressional Gold Medal, the nation's highest civilian honor, in 2007 as a Documented Tuskegee Airman. He received his second gold medal as a lifetime Civil Air Patrol participant in 2014. Mattie and Gertrude want to acknowledge and thank all expressions of sympathy from family and friends during this time. A memorial service was held in Wichita.
