Dennis D. Schimmel

Retired Staff Sgt. Dennis D. Schimmel, 65, of Maple Hill, Kansas passed away July 9, 2018. He was born September 27, 1952 at Topeka, Kansas to Ralph and Helen (Obermeier) Schimmel. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1970. He joined the Kansas Army National Guard and served 27 years. He was employed at Goodyear Tire & Rubber for 14 years while also working as a mechanic for Yellow Cab in Topeka throughout the 70's and 80's. For the remainder of his life he worked as a diesel mechanic for various companies including Hertz/Yellow Cab, Hertz/Penske, Penske Trucking and Koch Trucking. He worked with his family at Puffy's Steak and Ice House and had volunteered with the Maple Hill Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 130. Dennis enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, cooking, entertaining his family and working around his ranch. He was always on the look out for Big Foot! He is survived by his loving wife, Alice who he married on December 21, 1972; his children: Alfred "Brad" (Erika) Schimmel , Denise Schimmel, Heather Schimmel and Holly Schimmel all of Topeka; 7 grandchildren: Kelsey (Kevin) Parhomek, Bethany McGahey (Zach Pinette), Emily McGahey, Colton Schimmel, Eden Schimmel, Austin Schimmel and Ainsley Schimmel; 2 great-grandchildren: Myles and Oliver Parhomek; two brothers: Art Schimmel and Errol Lee Savage both of Topeka; and one sister, Diane (Bob) Schneider of Roseville, CA. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law and best friends, Skip (Pam), Bob (Vickie), Jim (Patti), Jon (Debbie), Richard (Penny) Puff, Earl Bayless and Buzz Swainbank; one sister-in-law, Ruth Puff; and many, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Kaye Swainbank, Marilyn Bayless and Myrna Warren; two brothers, Edward and Alfred Schimmel and his brother-in-law David Puff. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July, 17, 2018 at 2 PM at Dove Cremations & Funerals, 3700 SW Wanamaker, Topeka, KS 66610. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Maple Hill Kansas Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dennis Schimmel Memorial Fund c/o Azura Credit Union, 1129 Kansas Ave., Topeka, KS 66612.
