Gov. Laura Kelly issued a verbal declaration of a State of Disaster Emergency at 3:31 p.m. today for Finney County due to a wildland fire.

Governor Kelly requests major presidential disaster declaration for winter storms

Gov. Laura Kelly sent a letter to President Joe Biden seeking a major disaster declaration for winter storms accompanied by snow, ice and extreme winds that occurred March 17-22. Kelly submitted her request through the Federal Emergency Management Agency May 3.

Governor Kelly Signs State of Disaster Emergency Declaration

An intense springtime storm system that moved across Kansas the evening of April 29 with large hail and strong straight-line winds spawned multiple tornados causing damage to buildings, trees, and power lines in several counties.  In response to these storms, Governor Laura Kelly declared a State of Disaster Emergency effective at 8:57 p.m. on April 29.

SBA loans approved for Cottonwood Complex Wildland Fire damages

The Small Business Administration has approved an Administrative Declaration for residents and business owners in Reno County affected by the Cottonwood Complex Wildland Fire March 5-16. In addition to Reno County, residents and businesses in the contiguous counties of Harvey, Kingman, McPherson, Pratt, Rice, Sedgwick and Stafford are also eligible to apply for low-interest SBA loans.

Weather conditions for the coming six-day period indicate a significant threat for wildland fires in Kansas. Due to this potential, Governor Laura Kelly has issued a State of Disaster Emergency for the state.

Governor issues State of Disaster Emergency for wildland fires

Gov. Laura Kelly issued a verbal declaration of a State of Disaster Emergency today, due to the increased fire danger across the state today and into the week. Kansas is in a Red Flag Warning which means warm temperatures, very low humidities, and stronger winds are expected to combine to produce an increased risk of fire danger.  All outdoor burning should be avoided today.

Governor issues declaration of disaster emergency due to threat of wildland fires

Gov. Laura Kelly issued a verbal declaration of disaster emergency this morning, March 3, due to the potential for wildland fires in the state on Friday and Saturday. The declaration will allow the state to preposition aerial firefighting assets from the Kansas Forest Service for a quicker response to any fires that may begin.
