Carl “Ricky” Key Mar

Carl “Ricky” Key Mar, 72, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away Nov. 4, 2021.

Carl was born on July 18, 1949, in Wichita to Ning S. and Ping W. Mar. He attended Wichita East high school and graduated in 1967.

Carl served his country in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and continued to serve as a Navy and Army communication reservist. He served in the Kansas Army National Guard’s 105th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment. He volunteered to serve in Iraq for a total of 29 years of service with a rank of master sergeant.

Carl earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Wichita State University and studied at Syracuse University in New York. He was a gifted artist and taught graphic arts at Wichita State. When he wasn’t teaching, he took on independent graphic design jobs. Carl was also the editor of his own magazine from 1980-84 and worked at Blick Benest Company until his retirement.

He was united in marriage to Margareth Baez Lapiuk in Asuncion Paraguay Nov. 21, 2009. Carl enjoyed gardening, photography cooking, and carpentry and was an animal lover.

Carl is survived by his wife Margareth; his son Nathan Mar (Shauna); daughter Hayley Bauswell (Joe); grandchild Maycie Bauswell; mother Ping W. Mar; siblings Susan Bliss, Ann Mason, Wilbur Mar, and Elaine Stolze and numerous nephews and nieces. Carl was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Shelley Family Funeral Home, 803 Loomis St., Winfield. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. -1 p..m. prior to services. Graveside services with military honors will follow at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery of Winfield.

Memorial contributions in Carl’s name may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project; donations may be left in the care of the funeral home.
