Lucas Brandon Osborn
July 29, 2021
Capt. Lucas Brandon Osborn, 41, Hoyt Kansas, passed away June 27, 2021.
Lucas was born May 25, 1980, in Peoria Illinois, to Randy Osborn and Amy Metzger Osborn Bender. He graduated from Washburn Rural High School in 1998. A gifted musician and serving as drum major for the university band, Lucas graduated from Washburn University in 2004, earning a Bachelor of Education degree in music.
He and Audra Gordon were married in 2003; two children, Chloe and Jackson, were born to this union. Lucas and Vanessa Van Geem were united in marriage in 2013, the parents of Lillian.
Lucas joined the U.S. Army in 2002 and served in the 35th Infantry Division Army Band until 2007. He was a Kansas Army National Guard recruiter from 2007 to 2011.
In 2012, Lucas commissioned in the U.S. Army as an engineer officer and was part of the 891st Engineer Battalion for most of his career as an officer. He deployed to Kuwait with the 35th ID from 2017 to 2018 and Jordan during Operation Spartan Shield. He returned to Recruiting and Retention in 2019 as the financial officer for the KSARNG. Lucas served with honor and distinction, earning many awards and accolades and was greatly respected by his peers and leaders.
Lucas enjoyed fishing, bow hunting, Norse mythology, smoking/grilling meats, woodworking using his paternal grandfather’s tools ‑ “Glenn-gineering” as he called it ‑ and smoking his pipe. Lucas was a great friend and could always make people laugh. He especially loved his family; his children were his delight.
Survivors include his wife, Vanessa Osborn; children, Chloe, Jackson and Lillian; his parents, Randy and Karen Osborn, Topeka, and Amy and Alan Bender, Oskaloosa; brothers, Austin Hamm, Topeka, and Drew Bender, Lawrence; sisters, Emily Osborn and Katie Chaney (Robert), Oskaloosa, and Ashley Hamm, Topeka; nephews, Kye Moseley, Gavin Moseley, Silas Chaney, Oskaloosa, Quincy Hamm, Topeka; and Thomas Durr, Modesto CA; and niece, Mayah Moseley, Oskaloosa.
Lucas was preceded in death by his grandparents, Glenn and Ann Osborn, and Andy and Roberta Kern.
Family will greet friends from noon until 2 p.m. July 8 at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 Urish Road, Topeka. Funeral service, with military honors, will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Cremation will then take place.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mission 22 (united in the war against veteran suicide) or to the funeral home, going to an account being set up for the benefit of Lucas’ children. Donations to both may be sent in care of the funeral home.
