Retired Maj. Robert D. Onek, 84, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, Dec. 17, 2020, at a Topeka hospital. He was born Sept. 25, 1936, in Hiawatha, the son of George and Dorothy (Fiegenbaum) Onek, Jr.
Robert graduated from Hiawatha High School and earned a bachelor's degree in architecture from the University of Kansas in 1960.
Robert was in the 169th Support Battalion, Kansas Army National Guard. He was mobilized in 1968 with the 69th Infantry Brigade and served a tour in Vietnam. He was the original architect for the Museum of the Kansas National Guard, and was a Topeka architect.
Robert was a self-employed architect. He also worked for U.S.D 501. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, the Topeka Art Guild, the Optimist Club and volunteered for the Helping Hands Humane Society.
Robert married Carolyn Joy Fischer Oct. 7, 1961, in Lawrence. She survives. Other survivors include one son, Austen (Melissa) Onek of Memphis, Tennessee; two grandchildren, Tristen and Emma; and his siblings, Martha Biesenthal of Wamego, Katherine Berg of Topeka, and Louis Onek of Lebo; his brother-in-law, Marvin Bosse of Wheaton, Kansas, and many nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place and no services are presently planned. Private inurnment will take place in the Kansas Veteran's Cemetery at Fort Riley, Kansas at a later date.
