Retired Col. Richard Dick Moore, Jr., went home to his Lord and Savior Thursday, March 28, 2019, at Meadowlark Scenic (former Autumn Hills) in Manhattan, Kansas. Born in Elkhart, Indiana, Dec. 4, 1930, he was the son of the late Richard H. and Helen Lehman Moore. Upon graduating from Elkhart High School as part of the class of 1948, he joined his parents in the family business, Moores Brake Service. In 1947, Dick joined the Indiana Army National Guard. He served in Korea and Vietnam, then later with the 130th Field Artillery. He commanded the 1st Battalion, 161st Field Artillery, in the late 1970s. Dick made many life-long friends during his years in the military, serving in many capacities over his 38 years from a private in the infantry, working his way through the ranks and becoming an artillery officer and retiring a colonel. Among many awards, Dick received the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry (with Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star Medal, and the Army Parachute Badge. His military education included the Officer Embarkation Basic Course, the U.S. Army Field Artillery Officer Advanced Course, and the Command and General Staff College. On Feb. 10, 1962, Dick married Sandra Tutorow at the Dunlap United Methodist Church in Elkhart, Indiana. They have three daughters: Daina (Lee) Durham of Cleveland, Georgia; Catherine (Kirk) Cherry of Marietta, Georgia; and Wendy (Dave) Sadler of Franklin, Tennessee. Dick is survived by his weife and daughters and their spouses and grandchildren Sgt. Carson Durham; Alexis Durham; 1 Lt Miles Ball; Amelia Cherry; and Melinda, Elianna, Isabella and Isaac Sadler. The family will receive friends from 3-5:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz, Manhattan. Rev. Jerald Turner will lead graveside services with full military honors at the Prairie Street Cemetery in Elkhart, Indiana, at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 9. The Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home will handle all arrangements in Elkhart.
