18-027 State continues response to wildland fires in central Kansas

March 14, 2018 | By slarson

The Kansas Division of Emergency Management is deploying a Communication On Wheels unit to rural Rice County to facilitate communication between first responders fighting the wildland fires in Rice, Reno and McPherson counties. The FAA has restricted the airspace to an altitude of 3,000 feet over a three-mile radius around the Rice County fires. Additional Emergency Support Function partners have been called in to the State Emergency Operation Center in Topeka, including the Kansas Highway Patrol. High fire danger continues across Kansas. Grass remains very dry and people should remain vigilant about preventing fires. Avoid any activity that could create a spark and touch off a new fire. Do not drive on or stop your car on dry or tall grass because your exhaust can spark a fire; do not throw cigarettes on the ground. Stay away from all affected areas and do not drive through heavy smoke. Sightseeing puts you in danger and hampers the work of firefighting crews.
