The Kansas National Guard has draped camo netting over the entrance to Sporting KC stadium in anticipation of Military Appreciation Night on Aug. 6.
The Sporting KC soccer team is hosting Sporting Salutes, a military appreciation night, on Aug. 6, 7 p.m., at Childrens Mercy Park, 1 Sporting Way, Kansas City, Kansas. The entire game production will be focused on showing thanks and support for all past and present U.S. service members.
Maj. Gen. Lee Tafanelli, the Kansas adjutant general, and Maj. Gen. Steve Danner, Missouri adjutant general, will be in attendance along with Medal of Honor recipient retired Col. Don Ballard and dignitaries from other military service branches. Gold Star families from the Kansas and Missouri area will also be recognized.

The 35th Infantry Division Band, the official band of the Kansas National Guard, will be playing on the plaza prior to the start of the game. The Kansas National Guard will have military equipment on static display and four A-10 Thunderbolt fighter jets from Whitman Air Force Base, Missouri, will provide a flyover.
As a side note, during the game Sporting KC will be playing Atlanta United FC of Atlanta, Georgia, mirroring on a small scale a friendly rivalry on an international scale. Since 2005, the Kansas National Guard has been partnered with the Republic of Armenia under the National Guard Bureaus State Partnership Program. In the same way, the National Guard of Georgia is partnered with the nation of Georgia, which happens to be Armenias neighbor to the north.
