Retired Sgt. Maj. Michael Dean Hager, 69, Topeka, Kansas, passed away at St. Francis Hospital on August 24, 2019.
He was born in Concordia on May 29, 1950, to Adolph and Maxine Herbert Hager. Michael attended schools in Concordia and was a 1968 graduate of Notre Dame High School. He enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War. Michael later enlisted in the Kansas Army National Guard where he continued his career before retiring as a sergeant major after 30-plus years of service to our country.
Michael was a loving dad and grandpa who had his priorities in check. He was a devout Catholic and always willing to give and help others. Michael was very active with his children in their younger years and enjoyed making memories with them by coaching their sports teams and taking them camping, fishing, and hunting. He was a lover of animals, especially dogs, and his calm and soothing nature served him well in his hobby of breeding Labradors. In his spare time, Michael like to barbecue and watch football, cheering for his favorite team, Notre Dame. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.
Surviving Michael are his children, Amy Karr of Topeka and Casey Hager (Regan) of Pensacola Florida; grandchildren, Mathew, Joseph, Noah, and Eli Karr, Jackson and Parker Hager; siblings, Pat LeDuc (Larry) of Jamestown, Kansas; Marilyn Knuckles of Salina; Tim Hager (Connie) of Beloit; and Tom Hager (Missy) of Salina; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Michael are his parents.
The family will greet friends at 9 a.m. on Thursday, August 29 at Christ The King Catholic Church, 5973 SW 25th St., Topeka, KS 66614. Rosary will be prayed at 9:30 with Mass of Christian Burial starting at 10 a.m. Inurnment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
