David Kent Pitman, 71, was born on November 7, 1945, the son of J. Frank and Modena Helen (Porter) Pitman. He passed into heaven on August 27, 2017, in Loudon, TN.
His early years were spent in Minneola, KS until the family moved to Haven, KS in 1954. David graduated from Haven High School where he was a star basketball guard as well as an accomplished vocalist and trumpet player. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Emporia State University, KS, and a Master’s Degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, FL.
He was a representative of Standard Oil Co. in Fargo, ND, and a financial officer in a Kansas City, MO, loan company. The final career move was as a member of the U.S. Air National Guard. He was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base (Omaha, NE); Forbes Field (Topeka, KS); Andrews Air Force Base (Washington D.C.); and the Pentagon (Washington, D.C.). At Forbes Field, David was a pilot of the B-57 Canberra bomber, and KC-135 refueling aircraft. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel having served for 31 years in the United States Air National Guard.
He was devoted to his children and granddaughter, and was always proud of their many accomplishments. When his children were in high school, he was always involved in their activities. In particular, he loved being involved in their nationally acclaimed high school band program. He doted on his granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Quinn, and talked and asked about them constantly. David was a lifelong sports fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, the Kansas City Royals, and the University of Kansas Jayhawks basketball team.
After retirement, he moved to Tellico Village, Loudon, TN. His main interests there were as a member of a line dancing group, golf, and a dedicated member of the Tellico Village Community Church choir. David was a member of the American Legion and the Tellico Village Community Church.
Survivors include: son, Bryan (Catherine) Pitman, San Antonio, TX.; daughter, Carrie Pitman, Stafford, VA; sister, Nannette (Pitman) Martin, Emporia, KS; sister, Francia (Pitman) Goltz, Phoenix, AZ; granddaughter, Quinn Pitman, San Antonio, TX; granddaughter, Kaitlyn Wilkerson, San Antonio, TX; niece, Kim (Mark) Clapp, Lee’s Summit, MO; nephew, Steve (Nina) Martin, Canton, KS; nephew, Jason Goltz, Salt Lake City, UT; nephew, Gabriel (Eileen) Goltz, Phoenix, AZ; cousin, Lynn (Helen) Pitman, Minneola, KS. He will also be missed by many friends. David was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Michael, and his brother-in-law, Loren Martin.
Click Funeral Home was in charge of cremation arrangements which has taken place. The memorial service in Loudon, TN will be at 1:00 p.m. on Oct. 6, 2017, at the Tellico Village Community Church.
